Eligibility and Membership Membership in the Order is open to all commissioned officers who are serving or have served honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States (Active, Reserve, and National Guard), plus the Coast Guard, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and Public Health Service. Members have included Presidents Hoover, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan; chiefs of the military services—Pershing, MacArthur, Marshall, Burke, Westmoreland, Mundy, Sullivan, and Boorda; and many members of Congress, the judiciary, governors, state legislators, and local officials. Membership classifications are Regular, Perpetual, and Hereditary (for spouses and descendants of officers).
