COMMANDER'S COMMENTS ~ LCDR DON JENKINS
My Fellow Companions,
This will be my last report as your commander. It has been an honor to represent you and to lead you over the past 20 months. My commitments made at the outset of this command were pretty clear-cut. My intention was to help to grow our unit and to improve many of the routine functions that keep us all in contact and keep the Columbia MOWW unit functioning. Unfortunately, my personal business became much busier and my time spent to accomplish my lofty goals was curtailed. For that I regret I couldn't make more happen. Rest assured that I am committed to the unit and have some excellent opportunities in the near future to introduce the MOWW to local individuals who would add to the quality of our group and increase our numbers.
As part of the Massing of Colors directed by COL Frank Zander, I was very pleased with the end result. There were over 30 units participating. Many were civic organizations like DeMolay and the Boy Scouts. Overall the event was tremendous. COL Schwedo, Deputy Commander of Ft. Jackson was inspiring in his keynote address. I only wish our entire unit were present to hear his stories about brave Americans.
Also, LTC Wayne Smith has amassed a tremendous array of MOWW award recipients for the ROTC and JROTC. If you would like to be part of the presentation, please contact LTC Smith to offer your assistance.
Continue to stand on the honor and courage of our heritage as military officers and pray for those young men and women who go after us into the "den of the dragon".
LTC Bob Adams reports that there are as many as 18 candidates for the YLC camp this summer. We have funding for 9 at this time. Interviews are ongoing with some remarkable candidates being interviewed.
STAFF MEETING NOTES
The staff met at the assigned time and discussed several items pertinent to the unit. Most importantly, we decided to press on with the YLC program and supporting 13 young leaders for camp this summer. We will need a tremendous amount of support from each of you to meet this commitment. It is the right thing to do as we know that YLC changes lives for the better when we send these students off to Charleston. Note, the staff has made the decision to use the Commander's Discretionary Fund, if need be, to augment the coffers to support these youth. We are also in the process of creating an accurate roster of active MOWW companions with e-mail addresses.
REVIEW OF IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES
- There is a Celebrate Freedom event going on Ft. Jackson on Saturday, May 17th, at Hilton field. That is the parade field and will have many displays.
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
The best network for this ministry is "word of mouth" and our telephone committee. Please pass along any information you may have about individual companions, especially sickness and distress reports at any time or usually at our regular meetings and we will do our best to reach out to them.
FINANCIAL REPORT
An updated report will be delivered at this month's meeting.
